How to take care of a new tattoo?

Taking care of a new tattoo is essentially managing an open wound while trying to preserve the ink. The first few weeks are critical for preventing infection and ensuring the lines and shading stay sharp.

Here is exactly how to handle the healing process step-by-step.

The Initial Aftercare Process

1.Leave the wrap on:1 to 5 hours (or days if using Saniderm).

Your artist wrapped the tattoo for a reason—to keep bacteria out. If they used traditional cling wrap, keep it on for 1 to 5 hours. If they used a medical-grade adhesive bandage (like Saniderm or SecondSkin), leave it on for 3 to 5 days as directed by your artist, unless it leaks or fills with fluid.

2.Wash gently with bare hands:Immediately after removing wrap.

Wash your hands thoroughly first. Then, use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial liquid soap (like Dial Gold) to wash the tattoo. Gently rub away dried blood, plasma, and excess ink using your bare hands. Never use a washcloth or loofah.

3.Air dry or pat dry:Post-wash.

Let the tattoo air dry, or gently pat it down with a clean, completely dry paper towel. Do not rub it, and do not use a bath towel, which can harbor bacteria and leave lint in the wound.

4.Apply a paper-thin layer of ointment:Twice a day for the first 2-3 days.

Apply a very thin layer of a recovery ointment like Aquaphor or a dedicated tattoo aftercare balm. The tattoo should look slightly shiny, not wet or glopped. Too much ointment smothers the skin and can pull out ink.

5.Switch to fragrance-free lotion:Day 3 or 4 onward.

Once the tattoo starts drying out or peeling like a sunburn, stop using heavy ointments and switch to a light, fragrance-free, water-based lotion (like Lubriderm, Aveeno, or Cetaphil) 2 to 3 times a day.

Tattoo healing process day by day

  • Days 1–3 (The Weeping Phase): The area will be red, sore, and warm to the touch. It will leak plasma and ink. This is completely normal.
  • Days 4–7 (The Peeling Phase): The tattoo will begin to flake, peel, and look incredibly dry. It will look like a snake shedding its skin. Do not pick or peel the skin. Let it fall off naturally during washing.
  • Days 7–14 (The Itchy Phase): The skin will get intensely itchy as it knits back together. Do not scratch it. Slap it gently with an open palm or apply lotion to take the edge off.

Critical Rules: The “Do Nots”

  • No Submerging in Water: No baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, or oceans for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Short showers are fine, but do not let the stream blast the tattoo directly.
  • No Direct Sunlight: UV rays destroy healing skin and fade ink fast. Keep it covered with loose clothing. Do not apply sunscreen to a fresh, unhealed tattoo (usually safe after 3 weeks).
  • No Tight Clothing: Wear loose, breathable cotton clothes over the area to prevent friction from rubbing off scabs or trapping sweat.

Signs of Infection

If you notice extreme redness spreading outward, red streaks, prolonged swelling after day 4, thick yellow/green pus, or you develop a fever, see a doctor immediately.
