How to wash a new tattoo?

Washing a fresh tattoo correctly is the single most important step in preventing infection and keeping the lines crisp. A new tattoo is essentially an open wound, so you need to treat it with a high level of hygiene.

Here is the precise, step-by-step process for washing it safely.

The Washing Procedure

1.Wash your hands first:Crucial first step.

Never touch a fresh tattoo with dirty hands. Scrub your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before starting.

2.Wet the tattoo gently:Use lukewarm water.

Cup lukewarm water in your hand and pour it over the tattoo. Never run the shower stream or faucet directly onto a fresh tattoo, as the water pressure can damage the healing skin or pull out ink.

3.Lather and wash with bare fingers:No washcloths, no sponges.

Pour a small amount of fragrance-free, mild liquid soap (like Dial Gold, Cetaphil, or a dedicated tattoo soap) into your hands and work up a lather. Using only your bare fingertips, gently massage the tattoo in circular motions.

4.Rinse thoroughly:Remove all residue.

Gently splash lukewarm water over the area until all soap, plasma, dried blood, and excess ointment are completely gone. The skin should feel smooth, not slimy or sticky.

5.Pat dry with a clean paper towel:Do not rub.

Gently press a clean, unused paper towel against the tattoo to blot it dry. Do not use regular bath towels, as they harbor bacteria and can lint or snag on peeling skin. Let it air dry for 10-15 minutes before applying any aftercare products.

Critical Rules for the First 2 Weeks

What to avoid at all costs:

  • No scrubbing: Forcing flaking skin or scabs off will pull the ink out with them, leaving patchy spots in your design.

  • No soaking: Absolutely no baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, or ocean water. Submerging a healing tattoo introduces bacteria and breaks down the barrier your skin is trying to form.

  • No harsh chemicals: Avoid soaps with heavy fragrances, alcohol, or exfoliating beads.

When to Wash & Moisturize

  • Frequency: Wash your tattoo 2 to 3 times a day (morning, night, and after sweating or being outdoors).
  • Moisturizing: After washing and letting it air dry, apply an incredibly thin layer of ointment (like Aquaphor for the first 2-3 days) or a fragrance-free lotion (like Lubriderm or Aveeno). The tattoo should have a slight sheen, but it should never look wet, greasy, or smothered.
