Washing a fresh tattoo correctly is the single most important step in preventing infection and keeping the lines crisp. A new tattoo is essentially an open wound, so you need to treat it with a high level of hygiene.
Here is the precise, step-by-step process for washing it safely.
The Washing Procedure
Critical Rules for the First 2 Weeks
What to avoid at all costs:
No scrubbing: Forcing flaking skin or scabs off will pull the ink out with them, leaving patchy spots in your design.
No soaking: Absolutely no baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, or ocean water. Submerging a healing tattoo introduces bacteria and breaks down the barrier your skin is trying to form.
No harsh chemicals: Avoid soaps with heavy fragrances, alcohol, or exfoliating beads.
When to Wash & Moisturize
- Frequency: Wash your tattoo 2 to 3 times a day (morning, night, and after sweating or being outdoors).
- Moisturizing: After washing and letting it air dry, apply an incredibly thin layer of ointment (like Aquaphor for the first 2-3 days) or a fragrance-free lotion (like Lubriderm or Aveeno). The tattoo should have a slight sheen, but it should never look wet, greasy, or smothered.
